Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do After Every Session
What you do in the 24 to 72 hours after each laser session has a direct impact on your results, your comfort, and the health of your skin. Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle with concentrated heat. That process leaves the skin temporarily sensitized. With the right aftercare, you protect your skin, speed up recovery, and set up the next session for maximum effectiveness.
This guide covers exactly what to do and what to avoid after every session from the first hours through the following weeks.
The First 24 Hours: Critical Window
The hours immediately after your session are when the skin is most reactive. Keep these rules in mind:
Cool the skin if needed
If the treated area feels warm or looks pink, apply a cool (not ice-cold) compress for 10 to 15 minutes. Aloe vera gel straight from the fridge is also excellent. Avoid anything that adds heat to the skin.
Skip the hot shower
Warm water is fine. Hot water increases blood flow to the surface and can intensify sensitivity and redness. Wait at least 24 hours before a hot shower, bath, or sauna.
No exercise
Exercise raises body temperature and causes sweating. Both can irritate freshly treated skin and create an environment for bacterial growth on open follicles. Skip the gym for at least 24 hours, ideally 48.
Wear loose clothing
Friction against treated areas causes irritation. If you had legs, bikini, or underarms treated, wear loose, breathable clothing for the rest of the day.
No perfumed products or deodorant
Skip scented lotions, perfumes, and antiperspirant on or near treated areas. The skin's barrier is temporarily more permeable, and fragrance ingredients can cause reactions on sensitized skin.
Days 2 to 7: The Shedding Phase
Over the week following your session, treated hairs will begin to shed. This is not regrowth. The follicle has been damaged and is expelling the hair shaft. You will notice:
- Hairs seeming to "grow" but actually working their way out of the follicle
- Small bumps around follicles (similar to ingrown hairs) as the dead hair sheds
- The treated area gradually becoming smoother as hairs fall out
Gentle exfoliation from day 5
After day 5, a gentle exfoliating scrub or soft washcloth helps hairs shed more cleanly and reduces the chance of ingrown hairs. Do not exfoliate before day 5 or use aggressive chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs) for the full first week.
Moisturize daily
A fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer keeps the skin barrier supported during the shedding phase. Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or aloe vera.
Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable
This applies both before and after treatment, but the post-treatment window is especially important. Treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage and pigmentation changes (particularly hyperpigmentation in deeper skin tones).
- Apply SPF 30 or higher to any treated area that will be exposed to sun, starting 24 hours after treatment
- Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors
- Avoid tanning beds entirely during your treatment course
- Avoid prolonged direct sun on treated areas for at least 2 weeks after each session
What to Avoid Between Sessions
| Avoid | Why | When You Can Resume |
|---|---|---|
| Waxing or plucking | Removes the hair root the laser needs to target | Never during treatment course |
| Self-tanner or spray tan | Increases surface melanin; creates burn risk at next session | At least 2 weeks before each session |
| Retinoids (Retin-A, retinol) | Increases skin sensitivity and risk of irritation | 5 to 7 days before next session |
| Chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA) | Thin the skin barrier; increase photosensitivity | 7 days before and after each session |
| Tanning (natural or UV bed) | Darkens surface skin; increases burn risk and pigmentation | Avoid throughout treatment course |
| Antibiotics (photosensitizing) | Increase UV and laser sensitivity dramatically | Discuss with your technician before booking |
Shaving Between Sessions: Yes, Please
Shaving is the only acceptable method of hair removal between laser sessions. It removes the hair at the surface level without touching the follicle. You should shave the treatment area 24 hours before each appointment so the hair is short enough for the laser to target the follicle efficiently without burning the surface hair shaft.
Shaving between sessions is not a problem for your results. In fact, it is the recommended practice.
Signs That Something Is Not Right
Most post-treatment reactions are mild and self-resolving. Contact your clinic if you notice any of the following:
- Blistering or crusting on the treated area
- Redness or swelling that does not improve after 48 hours
- Hyperpigmentation (dark patches) that appear in the days after treatment
- Hypopigmentation (pale patches) in the treated area
- Signs of infection: warmth, pus, increasing pain
These complications are uncommon when treatment is performed correctly, but they can occur, especially with suboptimal equipment or inadequate technician training. If you are at Ora Laser Center, your technician reviews your skin at every session and adjusts settings accordingly.

Book your appointmentFrequently Asked Questions
What should I avoid after laser hair removal?
For the first 24 to 48 hours: hot showers, saunas, exercise, perfumed products, sun exposure, tight clothing. For the full week: chemical exfoliants, retinoids. For the duration of your treatment course: waxing, plucking, tanning.
Can I shave after laser hair removal?
Yes. Shaving is the only recommended hair removal method between sessions. You can shave the day after treatment with no issue. Shave 24 hours before your next session for best results.
Is it normal for hair to fall out after laser?
Completely normal. Treated hairs shed over 1 to 3 weeks post-session. You can gently exfoliate from day 5 to help them exit cleanly and reduce the chance of ingrown hairs.
How long does redness last after laser hair removal?
Typically 2 to 24 hours. Cool compress and aloe vera gel help. If redness or swelling persists beyond 48 hours, contact your clinic.
